Rojava sign-on statement

Solidarity with Rojava! Turkey out of Syria! Prosecute Erdoğan for war crimes!

We, the undersigned, pledge our solidarity with the beleaguered people of Rojava. We call on the Australian Government to take the strongest possible action to force Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to withdraw his forces, and to work for a No Fly Zone along the border to protect the Kurds from further attack.

The Kurdish people did not want war, but they are fighting and dying as a result of the decision by US President Trump to give Turkey the green light to invade Rojava and expel the Kurdish population. Trump’s betrayal has been compounded by the subsequent deal cooked up by Russian President Putin and Erdoğan that establishes a ‘safe zone’ that is not safe for Kurds.

The chairs of the foreign affairs committees of the parliaments of Germany, France, the UK, the European Parliament and the House of Representatives of the United States have condemned the invasion as ‘a violation of international law’. Amnesty International reports that it has been accompanied by war crimes and in the opinion of Carla Del Ponte, a former UN investigator who prosecuted war criminals in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, Erdoğan should be charged with war crimes.

Turkish forces and their Islamist proxies have indiscriminately targeted civilians, including with phosphorus and napalm bombs. Civilians have been bashed and shot and the killings filmed and broadcast on social media — as in the case of Professor Hevrin Khalaf, a leader of the Future Syria Party.

Such brutality is a deliberate tactic to force civilians to flee, and to date up to 300,000 civilians have fled the war zone. This is creating an immense humanitarian crisis in a region that has already suffered so much as a result of the war against ISIS.

Erdoğan’s stated aim is to expel the Kurdish population from a thick belt along the frontier and replace them with non-Kurdish refugees from elsewhere in Syria. In 1994, a UN Commission of Experts found that the forcible removal of populations on ethnic or religious grounds is a crime against humanity, and could fall within the UN statutes on genocide. World leaders defer to the Turkish strongman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The US and Russia collude with his plans for ‘ethnic cleansing’ but he should be prosecuted in the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity

The refusal to confront this international gangster is a vile betrayal of the people who sacrificed 11,000 of their young men and women in the war against ISIS. It is only the latest episode in a century-old history of betrayal.

It is also monumental foolishness to allow the invasion to continue. Already, numbers of ISIS fighters have escaped from camps in Rojava and the longer the Turkish onslaught continues, the more likely it is that more of these fanatics will escape and take up arms. This can only further endanger the lives of civilians in the Middle East and the whole world.

The world must shout loudly against this barbarism. We demand urgent action to force an immediate Turkish withdrawal and allow the entire civilian population of the border regions of Rojava to return to their homes. Such action should include:

  • That the Australian Government use its good offices in the United Nations for the creation of a No Fly Zone along the Turkish-Syrian border;
  • That Australia impose strong diplomatic and economic sanctions on Turkey to force it to comply with international law and withdraw all its troops and proxies from Syria;
  • That Australia call on the UN to send Blue Helmet peacekeepers to protect the Kurds and keep Turkish forces and their jihadi proxies out of Rojava.

As an American writer noted ‘It is the powerful who write the laws of the world — and the powerful who ignore those laws when expediency dictates’. We, however, refuse to remain silent in the face of these great crimes.
